The ETL (extract, transform, load) process is the process of extracting data from the source system, applying transformational rules, and then exporting the transformed data into the target system. This process is an important step of data warehousing as it helps ensure the consistency and integrity of the data.

Extract

Data is extracted from the source system and the raw data is stored in a staging area. Most of the time, this involves extracting from multiple source systems. Data can be extracted from numerous different sources such as relational databases, XML, JSON, flat files, or even extracted from the web by using scraping tools.

Transform

In this stage, we will apply transformational rules in order to prepare the data for loading. This process normally involves the following: calculations, removing duplicates, adjustments to level of detail, pivoting or transposing, filtering, sorting, generating surrogate keys, and so forth.

Load

Data can be loaded to be added to historical datas or overwrite existing tables. This depends on the requirements of the organization (for example, CRM data might be set to overwrite whereas transactional data might be added onto historical data).
